World of Warcraft by Blizzard Entertainment, more commonly known as WoW by its player base, is a popular MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) that has millions of subscribers around the world. There is an extremely vast and interesting world provided to players to explore, kill monsters or other players, and with two separate factions, as well as 10 different classes to choose from, the experience is unique to each individual. Players can choose to be Horde or Alliance, depending on the type of play style that appeals to them. Horde tends to be considered the “evil” side for the game, whereas the Alliance tends to be considered “good.” There are many players who are very loyal to one side or the other, and swear they will never roll (create) a character on the opposite faction. Of course, there are also plenty of players who are neutral and have characters, or toons, on both sides. The experience is different for each side and to truly appreciate the game, one should at least raise one toon from 1 to max on both sides. Both factions offer distinct races, and not every race can become every class. For example, on the Alliance side the Draenei race cannot be a rogue, warlock or a druid, and on the Horde side, the Blood elf cannot be a Shaman or a Druid. If you are looking to play a specific class, you may be forced to choose a race that is not your favorite in order to get the class you want.

The Alliance races are Draenei, Dwarf, Gnome, Human, Night Elf, and Worgen (the newest race). On the Horde side, players can choose from the races of Blood Elf, Goblin(the newest race), Orc, Tauren, Troll, and Undead. Each race has its own advantages, such as resistances to certain types of damage, increased skills or reputation gains, or greater expertise using different types of weapons. These racial bonuses are an interesting part of the makeup of a character and can provide a boost depending on what you are hoping to achieve.

The game has three distinct roles to be played: Tank, Healer, and Damage (or DPS). This is where the ten different classes come into play. Each class excels in at least one of these areas, and many excel at all. With 3 different talents per class, the choice of what role to take and how to play the character are extremely individual and interesting.

The classes are as follows:
Death knight – A class that can serve in the role of Tank or DPS.
Druid – This class excels in all three roles: tank, healer, and DPS
Hunter – This class can only perform one role, that of DPS.
Mage – This is another class that can only perform one role, that of DPS.
Paladin – This is another class that excels at all three roles: tank, healer, and DPS.
Priest – This class make exceptional healers and can provide excellent DPS.
Rogue – A class that can only perform the role of DPS.
Shaman – This class can be either DPS or healer.
Warlock – The role of DPS is the only one a warlock can take.
Warrior – This class make great tanks and powerful DPS.
